Meanwhile in Nigeria: Binanceās relationship with the Nigerian government has been far from smooth as the exchange remains entangled in a legal battle, facing money laundering and tax evasion charges.
- The Nigerian government believed that the exchange was complicit in the rapid devaluation of its local currency last year and proceeded toĀ crack down heavily on the firm.
- Authorities detained two top officials of the crypto firm shortly before Binance discontinued its peer-to-peer trading platform in the country and restricted access to Nigerians.
Fresh allegations? Nigerian authorities recently accused Binance of facilitating illicit financing to fund criminal groups in the country.
- The government is also seeking to prosecute Nadeem Anjarwalla for escaping custody.
Key quote: Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the countryās information minister, said:
āNadeem Anjarwalla actually did escape lawful custody, and this is against our laws. Nigeria made a case with Interpol to apprehend him and bring him back to face justice.ā
