Privacy policy

Last updated: February 17, 2026

Mariblock is a media, research and advisory organization covering Africa’s programmable value economy. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it and what choices you have.

1. Data we collect

Account information

When you create an account or subscribe, we collect:

  • Name and email address
  • Organization, role and location (optional)
  • Newsletter and content preferences

Logged-in usage data

When you are logged in, we process activity related to the features you use:

  • Articles read and time spent

This data supports personalization, recommendations and product improvement.

Anonymous visitor data

If you browse Mariblock without an account, we collect limited aggregate data:

  • Page views and approximate session duration
  • Referrer source
  • Device type and browser
  • Country or region derived from IP

We do not build individual profiles for logged-out visitors.

Technical and security data

To keep Mariblock secure and reliable, we collect:

  • IP addresses for fraud detection, rate limiting and abuse prevention
  • Login attempts and access logs
  • Error logs and performance metrics

IP addresses are used for security and operational purposes and retained for limited periods.

Email engagement

For newsletters and email communications:

  • Opens and clicks
  • Email client and device type
  • Subscription and unsubscribe activity

Advertising and sponsored content measurement

Mariblock carries two forms of commercial content: display ads and sponsored cards. Display ads appear in designated positions on the page. Sponsored cards appear in feeds alongside editorial content and are clearly labeled.

Advertising on Mariblock is targeted by topic, section and audience segment (such as region or professional role). We do not use cross-site tracking, retargeting pixels or third-party behavioral profiles. Advertisers never receive data that identifies individual readers.

For both formats, we measure:

  • Impressions and clicks
  • Engagement by content section or placement
  • Campaign performance over time

This reporting is aggregate. Advertisers receive campaign performance data, never individual reader data. No third-party ad network scripts run on Mariblock.

Product analytics

We use PostHog, a self-hostable product analytics platform, to understand how people use Mariblock. This includes:

  • Page views, navigation paths and feature usage
  • Session recordings (with personal data redacted)
  • Funnel analysis and retention metrics

PostHog data is used exclusively by the Mariblock team for product decisions. It is not shared with advertisers or third parties.

2. How we use data

We use data to:

  • Deliver and operate Mariblock services
  • Personalize feeds and recommendations
  • Inform editorial and research decisions
  • Measure platform performance and growth
  • Improve features, search and navigation
  • Prevent fraud, abuse and security incidents
  • Communicate with subscribers and members

3. Legal basis for processing

Depending on context and location, we process data based on:

  • Performance of a contract when you create an account or subscribe
  • Legitimate interests to operate, secure and improve the platform
  • Consent for optional analytics or preferences where required

You may withdraw consent for optional processing at any time.

4. Cookies and tracking
